Two ways to bank

Digital or high street — the difference is architecture, not quality

Digital banks operate entirely through an app, with no branch network. Account opening is usually faster, and the lower running costs tend to show up in features rather than headline rates. High-street banks keep branches, telephone banking and in-person support — which matters if you handle cash regularly, prefer speaking to someone directly, or want a longer-established relationship. Neither is the default choice: what suits you depends on how you actually bank day to day, not which one is "better."

Every review on this page is checked against the same criteria, regardless of provider — see how.

A different kind of question

Student and business accounts aren't a separate set of banks — most of the providers above also offer one. We review them separately because eligibility, fees, overdrafts and features differ enough from an everyday personal account that they need their own comparison, not because they're a different tier of bank.
