Switching bank? Tick these off

The Current Account Switch Service (CASS) moves your money, Direct Debits and payees within 7 working days — but some things never move automatically. Print this page (Ctrl/Cmd-P) and work through it.

Before you start the switch

  • Check the new account's eligibility rules (minimum pay-in, Direct Debits required, credit check).
  • If you're overdrawn, remember the overdraft does NOT move — plan how you'll clear it with the old bank.
  • Apply for an overdraft at the new bank before switching if you need one — limits aren't guaranteed.
  • Download or save any old statements you might need (mortgage applications often ask for them).
  • Check the switch offer terms on the provider's own page — bonus amounts, deadlines and qualifying steps change often.

CASS moves these automatically

  • Your balance on switch day
  • All Direct Debits
  • Standing orders
  • Payees and future-dated payments
  • Your salary instruction (employer is notified)
  • Payments sent to your old account — redirected for at least 3 years

You must update these yourself

Allow a week or two after switch day to catch them all — the first failed payment usually flags anything you missed.

  • Recurring card payments (Netflix, Amazon, gym, app subscriptions) — these sit on your debit card, not the account
  • Apple Pay / Google Pay / Samsung Pay — remove the old card, add the new one
  • Saved payment methods on shopping sites and in browsers
  • Budgeting apps and Open Banking connections — reconnect them to the new account
  • Any 'pay a contact' or payment links tied to your old account
  • Your employer's payroll if the CASS notification hasn't landed (rare, but check)

CASS guarantees completion within 7 working days and covers 99%+ of UK current accounts. If anything goes wrong with the switch itself, the service's guarantee requires the banks to put you back in the position you would have been in.
